Sony and Theta Labs have created their own blockchain-powered platform to deliver future 3D content. They are offering a free, public beta of the network that offers exclusive NFTs for free on the platform through July 29th.
The Del Mar Fair will also host an event with prizes including $10,000 USD in cash and HTS tokens as well as a new Sony A7R III camera by participating artists at this year’s fair from June 22nd–24th.

Theta Labs is teaming up with Sony to create a 3D NFT that doesn’t need 3D glasses.

The “Tiki Guy” NFT will be compatible with a $4,999 Sony Spatial Reality Display. Customers who buy the NFT with a verified US shipping address will be eligible for a free display.

Only ten NFTs will be produced, thus demand might considerably outstrip supply, particularly if the price is lower than the display’s RRP. The technology detects eye movement to produce a 3D picture no matter how you see the display, according to Sony, a Theta Labs investor.

A high-precision microoptical lens divides pictures for each eye, creating a 3D effect without the need of special glasses. The product’s website offers applications in gaming, entertainment, and medicine.

However, the potential for usage as a high-end NFT display is clear. The opportunity to show off unique NFTs to friends, family, and the broader community is restricted for investors who spend thousands on them.

Experience with NFT

NFT frames for 2D content are available on the market. They link to your wallet to authenticate ownership and show the relevant information. You may, however, download the picture or video from the blockchain and see it on a basic WiFi digital display or other glasses-free displays, such as the Acer ConceptD Spatial Labs edition laptop.

In 2021, the Sony display received the CES Innovation Prize. It might be the answer to the current decline in 3D content appeal, particularly among people who already possess a high-end computer.

Sony Electronics Inc. Vice President of Business Development Nick Colsey said:

“Immersive, three-dimensional NFTs are a fantastic opportunity for metaverse aficionados and collectors to see the possibilities of Sony’s Spatial Reality Display.”

To show the graphics on the Sony device, the “Tiki Guy” NFTs will need a Windows PC running Unity. The computer’s recommended specifications are rather high. It requires an Intel Core i7-9700K processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER graphics card. If you don’t already have a gaming rig from the previous several years, you could need to invest a few thousand dollars on a computer merely to operate the display.

A fresh 3D NFT adventure

Theta Labs, Inc. CEO Mitch Liu said:

“Those who possess NFTs are prepared for the next revolution. Sony’s Spatial Reality Display is a “whoa, baby” experience, displaying NFTs in an entirely new light. Ready for Web3 Metaverse.”

Investors won’t be able to enjoy a 3D version of their Bored Ape just yet since the NFT itself must be natively in 3D. However, technologies like NFT derivatives, similar to Nifty Tailor, might possibly expand the market for 3D NFTs.

Users may generate verifiable on-chain derivatives from NFTs using such services. While the present generation of high-value NFTs cannot be shown in 3D, users may one day be able to generate a 3D NFT derivative.

Alternatively, depending on how they are designed, NFTs for 3D objects used in metaverse projects like Decentraland or Sandbox may be compatible with the Sony display. In these projects, avatars, goods, and personalities appear as 3D objects that may be interacted with in wallets like Trust Wallet or OpenSea.

However, there may be additional work to integrate these into the Unity software needed to power the Sony Spatial Reality Display. The possibility to display these is much greater than NFTs that are entirely 2D, but for now, “The Tiki Expert” NFT holders will be able to enjoy their art in a very exclusive club.

The “Tiki Guy” limited-edition NFTs will be offered on Theta Labs’ ThetaDrop marketplace, but no release date has been set. The NFTs will be accessible in 2D as well, according to Sony.
